"The Macphails and the Campbells had come into Proton township, Grey Co. in the days when it was the Queen's bush, they cleared the land,
built the buildings, a couple of sets; first the log shanty and stable of the pioneers and later house and barns of a much more enduring type. Yet they had never
more than a living, and they never ceased working as hard as their strength and age would allow. The women worked as hard as the men, indeed they had much less
leisure" ~A. Macphail Autobiography |
